Well, after repeated installs and uninstalls, and then reading your faq here on Starforce, I have decided the $40 isnt worth this hassle. I loved the original and really was looking forward to the sequel...I've installed this thing, and it continues hanging up on the disc read, giving an error. Now this is a BRAND NEW Sony drive, all drivers up to date on everything, new system...so I know its not the system this is the first game thats given me any trouble...anyways, I am not up to lingo speed on software protections, etc etc etc all I know is if I drop the $$$ on a game, I should be able to come home and install it without any problems. It hangs up saying its verifying disc, takes about 3-5 minutes for that blue line to reach the other side, then suddenly says its having trouble identifying the cd...makes no sense. SO, I installed, uninstalled, reset when it said too, same thing over and over, the drive light blinks the cd spins, no scratches, no lint, no hair or whatever no prints on the cd...its discouraging. I dont understand it. SO I tried to install it on the wife's computer...same deal but different machine different cd rom, etc.
I hate to say it but after scanning the forums, if it is indeed the cd protection thats causing this, I would suggest a patch to replace it with something else that functions. Anyways, I guess I wont be able to enjoy the sequel to a promissing title. Thanks anyways.

It is strange that you are getting the same problem on two different systems...

Do you have disk 2 (the play CD) in an optical drive? Using disk 1 (the install CD) usually produces a different error than you are getting, though.

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before trying to start the game?

Did you install the patch? The patch may update the copy protection, which could fix whatever conflict it is having with your drives/systems. Also, you can try the latest version of the Starforce drivers; Updating or removing StarForce drivers.

If all else fails, in the error message (either 'disk detection' or 'no disk found'), click the 'Information' button, then when that finishes, click the 'View Report' button. Save the resulting text file somewhere, optionally zip it, and email it to Larian (support@larian.com) with a description of the problem. They can create a file the copy protection can use to check your system on startup, rather then the play CD.

Actually I was getting the same response to my game, it keeps asking for a CD key, but the game didn't come with one. I'm patching everything now, so if it works, I'll edit this

Edit/update:
I'm still having trouble with it. And I can't find the updated starforce driver off of their site, I don't know exactly what I'm looking for.
But it's not a no disc read error, it's a "disk read error when checking disc. Make sure a lisenced disk is in the drive, the disc is not damaged and the valid Disc Key is entered"
The problem is, is now it won't ask for a disk key or anything now that I installed the patch.

Do you have the play CD (disk 2) in an optical drive?

The UK and North American English versions of the game do not use a CD key that gets typed in during install. The copy protection message referring to a CD key is a poorly worded error, most often caused by having the install CD (disk 1) in the drive rather than the play CD (disk 2) when trying to start the game. The UK CDs are more clearly labeled.
The Australian English version uses a different copy protection, which does require a CD key.

If you are using disk 2, try a different optical drive, if possible (the copy protection can decide that it will only work on one of the available drives).

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before trying to start the game?

Starforce reorganized their site since the post above was made. This link works: Updating or removing StarForce drivers.

Did you start getting a different error after you installed the patch? If so, what is it; if not, what happens when you try to start the game? If the copy protection window exits without an error, then the problem is probably not with Starforce. Check the topics below for other suggestions.

Yeah I shut down everything, and I uninstalled and reinstalled, when I reinstalled I refused the reboot because I remembered the starforce problems that I read on the starforce forums. I didn't reboot, so I didn't let starforce attach itself, and sure enough the program runs (a little jerkily, but since I just repatched it, it should run smoother now)
and yeah, I'm sure I had the right disk in there.
(no offense, but that's kind of the first thing I checked, I think it's the first thing a lot of people check)
Also, yeah I was getting the same error message when I patched, but when I refused starforce's grabbing my hard drive, it worked. So it's a problem with starforce
( I was still getting it after I updated starforce too so yeah..)

It probably is, but it is easy to check and shouldn't be ignored. Actually, having the wrong disk in the drive is the most common cause of that error message, of the people who post about it in the forum. The Starforce error is not worded very clearly (nor are the labels for the North American release CDs), which may make some people assume the problem is something serious, so they don't think to try swapping CDs.
