.. still can't get through the arch north of where King Boreas was. It's like the game thinks the barrier is still there - I can't throw anything through as it says path blocked.

I am wearing the Royal Guard Amulet, I answered the statues' question about the earth elemental correctly and the blue barrier disappeared.

Have I forgotten to do something?

Anyway, try reloading an older save and try again.

It's OK - got it: there was some burning on the floor in front of the arch, probably from the battle (although it didn't go away over time). A burst of rain made the characters able to path through it when they refused to before.
