The first game i played from this series was Divinity Original Sin 1 and after that Divinity Original Sin 2 so i am not exactly familiar with the story/lore from the older games of this franchise.

I am really confused at the complete lack of Holy/Divine/Light type of magic that is usually present in other fantasy RPGs.

For example if i want to make a Paladin or a Priest there is no holy/divine magic for me to select.
Instead i have to take Water Magic for healing and whatnot else that thematically has nothing to do with the standard Holy/Divine Paladin or Priest.

Come to think of it if i want to play the opposite of Paladin and Priest (something like Blackguard or Dark Priest) there is also no real "shadow/unholy" to act as the opposite of Holy/Divine/Light magic (witchcraft in DOS 1 isn't exactly what i mean).

So can anyone please explain the reasons why are Holy/Divine/Light types of magic so absent in a series that revolves around Divinity?
Thank you for reading.

Rivellon has multiple gods (seven main gods, and a bunch of lesser ones that don't really play a part in the games), rather than good/light vs evil/dark gods. It is just based on a different structure for the lore.

I posted a reply on this on Reddit but I'll post it here as well in case it was missed or someone else spots this and is curious. (And keep in mind this is all based on an understanding that I've gotten from the games, it's not 'official' or anything):

"Divinity" in Divinity is less about being classically 'divine' as we imagine it and more about being the most powerful person around.

Gods in Divinity aren't 'divinely mandated', they're not especially holy, they didn't spring from an expanse of nothingness to create existence. They're just extraordinarily powerful Sourcerers who are so much stronger than everyone else they might as well be gods.

The 'Divine' in Divinity is literally just a normal guy who was given a ton of magical power. The Gods themselves are just Eternals(A semi-immortal precursor race that were extremely advanced) who ... you guessed it, got a ton of magical power. Enough so that they were effectively invulnerable other than by directly draining away/attacking their magical power itself. Gods and Divines in Divinity aren't 'holy'. They're just so much stronger than everyone else.

TL;DR: There's no traditional 'holy' magic because there isn't. There's only Source, and those strong enough in Source are gods because there isn't anyone around who can challenge them enough to prove otherwise
