Hello all. First post. So I just rebuilt my computer, and everything is great, expect now Div crashes (previously it was rock hard stable). A lot. About every 10 minutes, wham, I'm back at the desktop. Not only that, but I have to reboot after each (computer locks up about 1 minute after the crash). The error I get is "ddhelp caused error in <unknown>". I have all the new drivers and patches. I've turned off all other programs, and I reinstalled Div. I read the technical support FAQ and applied what was applicable, but nothing has cured me. Anyone have a clue? Or are you guys going to let this poor sap just suffer?
Here are the specs: Dell 4100 1Ghz (Dude, I got a Dell. It's my office's computer) Intel 815 Motherboard 512Meg RAM GForce 2 MX Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64V DirectX 9 Nvidia Detonator 41.09 Driver Div HotFix 1.32

You really installed DX9? I heard till now that several people had severe problems with many games and graphical applications using DX9.

have you tried messing with the sound card and video card acceleration levels (if it's a problem with Direct X, this will usually help)? Duuuude, is you new Dell, like, a laptop? I had problems with the sound card included in the dell laptop; no problems after I reduced the acceleration level down to "2".

I have DX9 installed aswell and have no problems with it in any game (and I test/play many games <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> ) It's official out by Micrsoft and it's no beta release. If you use the original Detonators/Crystals you're safe.

And ... am I supposed to get any problems with Divine Divinity because I do not want to use DirectX 9 until it is really necessary for me?
At the moment I'm glad that DirectX 8.1 works for me without problems.

so what you're saying is that you're sticking with 8.1? You shouldn't expect probs, because 8.1 is the requirement

Well, I tried setting the audio acceleration down one level, and it worked sort of well for two days. It would still crash, even harder than before, but after about two hours. It would freeze in-game and I would actually have to turn the computer off (not just reset) and when it came back up, the screen resolution was 800x600 at login then would change to 1600 x 1200 at the desktop. Very odd. However, yesterday and today it went back to the old ddhelp error. I checked the audio acceleration settings and they were still at the one notch down setting.
Maybe I should just rebuild the computer again this weekend. Maybe I did something wrong last time. However, I rebuild computers all of the time, so I think I know what I'm doing by now. Glad I kept all of the recent drivers.
Any other things I should try before I get started? I'll start Sunday afternoon so if you have one you have until then to voice it.

when you rebuild, try putting the add-on cards (sound card, net card, etc) in different slots than they were in previously. This will force new interrupts and memory allocations to be used, which might clear up some things. If you have a manual for the MB, it should show which slots use which interrupts by default. Some bioses allow you to change this after the cards are installed, as well.
good luck.
oh, and check Dell's website for your particular model to see if there are any known issues and/or fixes for any of the included hardware.
